SPEAKER INFORMATION
Dr. Aleksandra Chauhan is an attorney, a University of South Carolina adjunct faculty, a writer and a public servant. Prior to opening her law firm, Dr. Chauhan was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law. She directed the Criminal Practice Clinic where law students represented clients on criminal charges, provided parole representation and assisted clients with elimination of barriers to successful reentry. Before joining the faculty at the law school, Dr. Chauhan was the Juvenile Defender Advocate at the South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense, where she supported the work of public defenders and other lawyers in representing youth in the state’s courts. Dr. Chauhan collaborated with the Innocence Project on individual cases and represented youth and adults in parole cases. Before then, she was an assistant public defender in Richland County representing youth in the family and criminal courts. She created a Holistic Representation Program at the Richland County Public Defender's Office, which provided reentry services to youth and families. Dr. Chauhan has also been actively involved in criminal justice reform in South Carolina, contributing to drafting bills and providing research for legislators. ?Outside of practicing law, Dr. Chauhan loves to spend time hiking, cycling, traveling, doing yoga, and exploring new places with her twin sons and two dogs.
Brittany Cain graduated from Winthrop University in 2016 with a degree in Family and Consumer Science with a concentration in Adolescent Studies. After graduation, she started her career as a victim advocate where she worked with victims of DV and SA in Rock Hill, SC. While working for Safe Passage, Brittany helped launch the Lancaster and Chester County offices where the focus was on DV education and prevention. After moving to Spartanburg, SC, Brittany changed courses in her career and began working for DJJ as an intake caseworker for Spartanburg and Richland Counties, and a supervisor in Lexington County. While working for DJJ, Brittany formed relationships with Solicitors, Defense Attorneys, Judges, DSS, DMH, DCA, SLED, and many other agencies that help youth in SC. After five fun years at DJJ, Brittany decided to combat youth incarceration from a different angle and joined SC DPS, OHSJP as a Juvenile Justice Compliance Monitor who reports compliance data to OJJDP, an office of DOJ. Here she continues to advocate for youth, with a focus on alternatives to detention and least restrictive care.
