Giving Feedback & the Role of Small Group Work

The session will also address setting up and managing small group forensic exercises.

GOALS: To become familiar with a particularized method of giving feedback focused on skill development and learning how to create and manage small groups that create common experiences for all participants.

On Your Feet #3: Practicing Feedback in Small Groups

During this session pairs will practice giving feedback after observing a prepared role play. Each pair will then receive feedback on how well they adhered to the JTIP feedback method. The session will end with considerations about developing and facilitating forensic exercises in general.

GOAL: To practice and become comfortable with using the JTIP Feedback Method and working in small groups.

Managing Disruptive Behaviors

Monopolizing, distracting, sleeping, inappropriate, inattentive, or flat-out offensive training participants can be a challenge for trainers and other participants alike. It’s one of the things that can throw a program off the rails. Learning how to view these behaviors and their effects on us will help trainers strategize how to handle them before they even occur.

GOAL: To identify how poor or distracting participant behaviors make trainers feel in the moment and how we can effectively regulate our responses to such behavior in a way that moves the training forward effectively.

Facilitating Difficult Conversations

Even when the participants are calm and respectful, facilitators often have to stir the pot with difficult conversations about race, class, and privilege. During this session participants will share and discuss effective strategies for managing disruptive behaviors and facilitating difficult conversations.

GOAL: To emphasize the importance of intentionally managing (rather than ignoring) disruptive behaviors and highlighting techniques for achieving effective facilitation in challenging discussions.

4:30 – 5:00

Reflection on the Day and Assignments

Participants will reflect on one thing they saw or heard that they would like to use in their training. Afterwards, participants will receive detailed homework instructions on how to prepare to deliver their final 15-minute segments of a JTIP lesson with their assigned partner on Day 3.

5:00 –

Prepping with Partners for the Next Day

Participants should work with their partners to prepare for the next day in any way they see fit. All participants will be expected to have planned out and prepared their final 15-minute lesson segment for the following day. This lesson will be a revised version of one of the lessons from earlier in the week.

Day 4: Friday, August 27th  (SC CLE Course No. 219018ADO 2.5 hours)

10:00 – 11:30

On Your Feet #5 JTIP Lesson Facilitation

Participants will start the morning in their small groups and will again work in pairs, but this time to co-facilitate a “do over” of one of the 15-minute JTIP segments the pair previously facilitated. Co-facilitators should choose one of the lesson segments they have already facilitated and deliver it again, accounting for the feedback you previously received and the things you have learned along the way. You may alter the previous presentation as you see fit, but training partners should again divide the facilitation as evenly as possible. Your fellow participants will again offer feedback on the lesson that you and your partner facilitate.

GOALS: To practice the skills needed as a Certified JTIP Trainer and to have a chance to incorporate feedback from the training directly into a final session.

Making JTIP Work at Home and Wrap Up

After having had the experience of preparing portions of lessons during the program and learning about what it takes to facilitate a JTIP training lesson, participants will explore what it takes to put on their own program. The group will discuss the expectations NJDC and their respective offices have for juvenile defender training across the state in the coming years and the roles Certified JTIP Trainers will play in that, and nationally. We’ll talk about lessons learned in seven years of putting on JTIP trainings across the United States and how to prepare. We’ll also talk more deeply about making the national JTIP curriculum specific to your state. Finally, participants will have the chance to examine and discuss whether they’ve made progress toward your learning goals; lingering questions or concerns about implementation, what more needs to be done.

GOALS: To work through issues and challenges in implementing JTIP in your local jurisdiction. To identify strategies you would like to use in your programs.

1:00 – 1:30

Wrap-Up

Congratulations to the new Class of Certified JTIP Trainers!
