Public Defense 101 is the first step in the Fundamental Advocacy Skills Training (FAST) Course for public defenders with fewer than 3 years' experience as a public defender. This seminar will provide useful information from the practical criminal defense perspective and will help to cultivate skills specifically necessary for effective client representation.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
REQUIRED TO ATTEND: All Full-Time Public Defenders with fewer than three years’ experience as a public defender, who have not previously attended PD101.
ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND: Indigent Defense Contract attorneys and Contract Public Defenders with fewer than three years’ experience as a public defender, who have not previously attended PD101.
THIS SEMINAR IS ONLY OPEN TO SOUTH CAROLINA PUBLIC DEFENDERS, CONTRACT PUBLIC DEFENDERS, AND INDIGENT DEFENSE CONTRACT ATTORNEYS WHO MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS.
- Public Defenders =
- attorneys who work full-time in a South Carolina Public Defender's office
- attorneys who have contracted with the circuit public defender to serve as a public defender.
- Fewer than three years experience as a public defender =
- Just out of Law School, or
- Experience in other areas of practice, even other aspects of criminal law, but new to public defender's office
- For Indigent Defense Contract Attorneys = have fewer than 3 years' previous experience working in a PD office and do not have equivalent criminal-defense trial experience.
TUITION COST
Free to eligible attendees.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS
For New PD/Contract PD/IDCA attendees who must travel more than 50 miles from their main office or residence, SCCID will provide hotel accommodations for Sunday and Monday nights. Hotel accommodations include parking at the hotel. SCCID does not pay for speaker accommodations.
NOTE: If you qualify for hotel accommodations, the hotel will bill SCCID directly for your base room cost and hotel parking fee. You do not have to worry about paying for and getting reimbursed for those expenses. SCCID DOES NOT PAY for incidental expenses or extras not included at the basic room rate.
PARKING and MILEAGE - INFORMATION TENTATIVE AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE
SCCID does not reimburse for mileage or commuter parking expenses.
HOTEL GUESTS: Attendees staying at the hotel may leave their cars parked in the hotel parking until the seminar ends. The hotel is about a 4-block walk to the Blatt Building.
SCCID pays for hotel guest parking at the hotel only. SCCID DOES NOT cover or reimburse any other parking expense.

SPEAKER PARKING: Parking for SPEAKERS will be in the state parking lot on Senate Street. Those spaces are available by permit only.
Parking Permit Details: Parking is by assigned space in State Parking Lot E located at 1310 Senate Street (See maps below). Commuters MUST print their parking pass and display it in their vehicle window. Any vehicle NOT displaying a pass is subject to being towed.
SCCID DOES NOT REIMBURSE for parking meter or garage parking fees.

FOOD
SCCID will provide beverages (coffee/water/soft drinks) and snacks in the mornings and during breaks.
Lunch on Monday: Buffet by Signature Catering.

Monday-Evening Social: SCCID will host a social gathering for attendees on Monday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Location TBD. SCCID will provide food. Cash bar.
