Who Should Attend
Attorneys must meet the following requirements to participate in this seminar:
You must be employed full-time by a South Carolina Public Defender’s Office OR contracted directly with the Public Defender's office OR a 608 contract attorney with a current contract as of 7/1/19 to handle criminal defense cases
AND
You must have fewer than 3 years’ experience as a public defender or equivalent trial practice as a criminal defense attorney
AND
You have not attended PD103 in the past
This conference is not open to private practitioners, who do not meet these criteria.
Prior participation in PD101 and PD102 is not a prerequisite.
Level of Instruction: Introductory/Intermediate
Program Summary
Public Defense 103: Trial Skills Workshop is a 2 1/2 day trial advocacy program comprised of presentations and on-your-feet small group sessions including pretrial motions, entering evidence, making objections, impeachment and cross-examination. Participants will perform in a series of practical workshops to incorporate what they learned from the presentations in exercises simulating discrete phases of a trial. Case materials for the exercises will be provided for the participants before the conference.
Hotel Accommodations
For student participants whose travel to the Greenville County Courthouse exceeds 50 miles, SCCID will provide hotel accommodations. SCCID has been able to reserve a limited number of rooms for participants downtown near the courthouse. Those rooms will be available based on conference registration order, so please register as soon as possible to secure your hotel room.
For student participants, SCCID will cover the base room rate plus tax and any hotel parking fee. The participant is responsible for any additional expenses.
For faculty members, SCCID will handle reservations to get you our group rate and to avoid double-booking. You will be responsible for payment for your own accommodations.
