OVERVIEW

Hervery Young is a native of Clinton, South Carolina.  He received his Bachelor’s degree from Johnson C. Smith University in English and his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law.

He started is law career as an associate with the Law Offices of Dorothy Jean Killian.  In 1995, he took a position with the Lexington County Public Defender office where he elevated to the position of Deputy Public Defender.  Hervery was appointed Assistant Federal Public Defender for the District of South Carolina in 2001.  In 2006, he was appointed Assistant Federal Public Defender for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Scranton Office.  He returned to South Carolina in 2013 to serve as the Circuit Public Defender for the Tenth Judicial Circuit (Anderson and Oconee Counties).  He joined the staff of SCCID as Deputy Director and General Counsel in February 2017 to replace J. Hugh Ryan, who was elevated to be the Executive Director of SCCID.

Hervery is a member of a number of professional organizations that focus on criminal defense for the indigent and civic organizations including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He and his wife, Kia, are the parents of one son, Brandon and a boxer mixed, Gracie.
