Rep. G. Murrell Smith is the 2009 recipient of the Commission's Distinguished Service Award


Rep. G. Murrell Smith, Jr., was honored by the SC Commission on Indigent Defense as the recipient of its 2009 Distinguished Service Award in a ceremony in his honor on Friday, February 19, 2009. Rep. Smith was a driving force in passage of the 2007 Indigent Defense Act which restructured the delivery of criminal indigent defense services in South Carolina and created a system of fiscal and performance accountability.  In addition he has been an outspoken proponent of adequate funding of indigent defense services in the state for many years, and has led efforts to educate the General Assembly on the importance of proper funding as being essential to the efficient functioning of the state's criminal justice system.  The award was presented by Commission Chairman Harry A. Dest.
