Hugh Ryan is a resident of the Columbia area, but originally hails from Sumter County and the High Hills of the Santee.  He is a 1993 magna cum laude graduate of Wofford College and a 1998 graduate of the University of SC School of Law.  Admitted to practice to the SC Bar and US District Court of SC in Novermber 1998, he is also a member of the Sumer County Bar Association.

Upon graduation from law school Mr. Ryan clerked for the Honorable M. Duane Shuler, circuit judge now retired, for one year when he joined a Sumter law firm.  During his tenure there he also served as an Assistant Public Defender in Sumter County. In August ,2005, he accepted a position as an Assistant Solicitor for the Third Judicial Circuit which he held until joining the staff of SCCID as Deputy Director and General Counsel in July, 2007.

He has been a member of the US Army Reserves since 1999 and presently holds the rank of Major in the US Army Reserve Judge Advocate Generals Corps, assigned to the 12th Legal Support Organization at Ft. Jackson, SC.  He previously served on active duty in the US Army field artillery as an ROTC commissioned officer from 1993 to 1995, and continued his service during his years in law school as a SC Natinal Guard artillery officer until 1999.

He is the father of two young children to whom he is devoted, Hugh IV, age 6, and Kristin, age 2; and a member and former vestryman of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross in Stateburg, SC.  When not on drill duty, his spare time is committed to his children, often at his family's farm near Wedgefield.
