Representing a Juvenile Facing Life without Parole 

The training will address recent state and federal developments in the law, an introduction to Miller v. Alabama, Aiken v. Byars, and juvenile sentencing and resentencing proceedings in South Carolina, how juvenile cases are different from adult cases, investigation and presentation of mitigating evidence, how to effectively present psychological assessments, and other common legal/factual issues in juvenile sentencing cases. 

Who Should Attend? 

ATTORNEYS:  This training is only open to defense attorneys, who have current, active cases either representing clients requesting resentencing under Aiken v. Byars or representing juvenile offenders where life without parole is a sentencing option. 

INVESTIGATORS:  Sentencing investigators working on these cases are also encouraged to attend.
