WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

REQUIRED TO ATTEND:  All Public Defenders with fewer than three years’ experience as a public defender, who have not previously attended PD101.

ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND:  608 Criminal-Contract attorneys with fewer than three years’ experience as a public defender, who have not previously attended PD101.

THIS SEMINAR IS ONLY OPEN TO SOUTH CAROLINA PUBLIC DEFENDERS AND 608 CRIMINAL-CONTRACT ATTORNEYS WHO MEET THE STATED REQUIREMENTS.

• Public Defenders =
  • attorneys who work full-time in a South Carolina Public Defender's office
  • attorneys who have contracted with the circuit public defender to serve as a public defender. 

• Fewer than three years experience as a public defender =
  • Just out of Law School, or 
  • Experience in other areas of practice, even other aspects of criminal law, but new to public defender's office
  • For 608 Criminal-Contract Attorneys, have not worked full-time in a public defender office for at least 3 years and do not have equivalent criminal-defense trial experience.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

PD101 is offered tuition-free to eligible attendees.

MCLE CREDIT?

PD101 is approved for 14.08 hrs MCLE credit, including 1 hr Ethics credit.

ACCOMMODATIONS?

For attendees who must travel more than 50 miles from their main office or residence, SCCID will provide hotel accommodations for Sunday and Monday nights, which include parking for guests at the hotel.  We hope to have sufficient room for everyone at  Graduate Columbia Hotel (formerly the Inn at USC), which is within convenient walking distance of the venue and also has shuttle service available.

If you qualify for hotel accommodations, the hotel will bill SCCID directly for your base room cost and hotel parking fee.  You do not have to worry about paying and getting reimbursed for those expenses.  SCCID  DOES NOT PAY for incidental expenses or extras not included at the basic room rate.

PARKING and MILEAGE?

SCCID does not reimburse for mileage. 

HOTEL GUESTS:  Attendees staying at Graduate Hotel Columbia may leave their cars parked in the hotel parking until the seminar ends.  The hotel is about a 4-block walk to the Blatt Building.  If needed, the hotel does have a shuttle that can provide transport.  Please inquire about that service at check-in

SCCID pays for hotel guest parking at the hotel only.  SCCID DOES NOT cover or reimburse any other parking expense.?

COMMUTERS:  For daily commuters not staying at the hotel, we will provide permits for free parking convenient to the venue. 

SCCID DOES NOT reimburse for meter or garage parking fees.

FOOD?

SCCID will provide lunch on Monday and Tuesday as well as beverages and snacks in the mornings and during breaks. 

SCCID will host a social gathering for attendees Monday evening beginning at 5:45 upstairs at the Carolina Ale House in the Vista (708 Lady Street).  SCCID will provide food.  Cash bar.

• If you are a public defender and you do not have an SCCID public-defender account, please email Lawrence Brown LBrown@sccid.sc.gov to get detailed instructions on how to set up your account.  YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMPLETE THE SITE REGISTRATION IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE INSTRUCTIONS.
• If you have an SCCID private-attorney account, but you now work for a PD office, contact Lawrence Brown LBrown@sccid.sc.gov for instructions to set up a new public-defender account.
• If you experience problems with registration such as an error message, please clear your browser cache or try using a different web browser to register.  If multiple people register using the same computer, errors can be expected.
