South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense
The Commission
The Commission consists of thirteen members: Five (5) members of the South Carolina Bar appointed by the Governor on recommendation of the Bar, two (2) of whom must primarily engage in Criminal Law practice, one (1) of whom must primarily engage in Family Law practice, and two (2) of whom must engage in practice areas other than Criminal or Family Law; four (4) Public Defenders, who are also appointed by the Governor on recommendation of the South Carolina Public Defender Association; two (2) retired judges, one of whom must be a retired Circuit Court Judge, and one (1) of whom must be either a retired Family Court or Appellate Court Judge, appointed by the Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court; the Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee or designee; and the Chair of the House of Representatives Judiciary or designee.All members serve four (4) year terms and may be re-appointed, except the legislative members who serve at the pleasure of their respective Committee Chairs. The Chair of the Commission is elected from the body, serves a two (2) year term and may be re-elected.
